Our Story

Hi, I’m Natalie, and my amazing partner Joey and I make tiles!

Sabiha Tiles was born out of a passion for glorious floors. During a 2017 trip to visit family in Malta, I noticed the century-old buildings were lined with gorgeous tessellating tiles in vibrant colours and left inspired and wanting to learn more.

I visited a tile artisan in his one-man factory in San Gwann, Malta, and after seeing the intricate process of pouring coloured cement into the stencil and the satisfying reveal when lifting the tile from the mould, I thought, “I could do this!”

Fast forward seven years to 2024 — my high school teaching career was starting to wear me down and I needed a change. I set my crazy dreams in motion, purchasing a tile-making mould and a 100-tonne hydraulic press. With Joey’s unwavering support and equal amount of passion, we experimented with local materials to replicate the tiles we saw overseas and began our journey of trial — and many, many errors!

We’re now proud to be Australia’s only manufacturers of handmade encaustic cement tiles.

Our Process

Traditionally, each encaustic tile is handcrafted, not printed.

Cement coloured with natural oxide pigments is poured into patterned stencils to form the design, then backed with layers of cement and sand. The tiles are compressed under high pressure, cured in water, and air-dried naturally—no firing or glaze. This process creates rich, long-lasting colours and a distinctive matte finish that only improves with age.

All of our tiles are made to order, one-by-one, so full customisation is available!

At Sabiha Tiles, we have brought encaustic tile production into the 21st Century. We still handcraft our tiles one-by-one, however using CAD software and 3D printing we are able to efficiently create custom designs to suit our clients. Traditionally, design stencils are made from bronze and meticulously bent and soldered into shape, making it costly and time consuming to create new designs.
